Neither a prior knowledge of yoga, nor level of physical fitness is required.Parkinson's disease(PD), a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system, impairs the sufferer's motor skills, speech, and other functions. It also solved by doing Yoga.

Hi - are there any dvd's or yoga classes specifically for people with parkinsons? My mother is 78 years young and has deteriorated badly in the last few months finding it difficult to speak, eat and sometimes walk. We are in colchester in Essex. I would love to find something that may be suitable for her. she does some basic exercise but I feel yoga may really help.

Kate,
Thanks for the info. I wrote you last January/February after having just been diagnosed. I found an organization based here in Indianapolis called Rock Steady Boxing. They treat Parkinson's patients with workouts based in boxing and modified for three different levels of Parkinson's disease. I have gotten some of my range of motion and use of one hand back since starting with them. The workouts are intense, hard, fun, and really help.
They also have a yoga program which I will start the first of October.
Just passing the info along so maybe someone else can use it.
Thank you for your blog, site, articles, etc.

Claudia,

On the web site www.parkinsonsyoga.com, on the Resources page, there are several books and DVDs listed. I particularly recommend those by John Argue for your situation. You could also email me at [email protected] with more detailed information on your location in Switzerland, and I might be able to locate a yoga therapist nearby.

I came across your blog while searching the internet for health blogs. Anyway, I have always been fascinated with in fact, I would like to share this piece of information I've read from another resource. It says that "Yoga is a science that has been practiced for thousands of years and its benefits are grouped into three categories-physiological, psychological, biochemical effects. Furthermore, scientists have laid these results against the benefits of regular exercise."
