When the media frenzy focused on Hurricane Gustav and the Republican National Convention, I couldn’t figure out why my blog readers were zeroing in on a different topic – bicycling with Parkinson’s. I had 650+ hits on my blog in the past two days, primarily on one story Pedaling Past Parkinson’s that I wrote more than a year ago in June 2007.
On September 2, 2008, Brian Williams of NBC Nightly News reported a story about Jay Alberts, a researcher at the Cleveland Clinic, who is studying a new treatment for Parkinson’s Disease: “forced exertion” through tandem bicycling at 80-90 rpms. The preliminary research suggests that the rate of exercise is an important factor in decreasing the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease.

Thank you, Brian Williams, for increasing awareness about exercising with Parkinson’s
